Graduates of BA English Studies can speak English and can write in English at the similar level as they can speak and write in their native language. Their competence of communication is the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment. Graduates of BA English Studies are equipped with knowledge about the English language, literature, culture and traditions and history of the English speaking countries.
In the course of BA English Studies students can learn a second foreign language so that they are able to use it at the B1 level at least. The acquired language abilities allow the graduates to get employed in publishing houses, cultural institutions, travel agencies, and in companies that do business with representatives who speak English, translation centres, administration, and offices cooperating with foreign partners.
Teaching specialisation
Students of the teaching specialisation begin their education which is designed to prepare them to work as a teacher of English from the 4th to the 8th grade of a primary school. In order to gain qualifications to work as a teacher of English in a secondary school, the students must continue the MA English Studies in the teaching specialisation and be granted the master’s degree (Polish magister) according to the Regulation of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education concerning standard of education preparing students to work as a teacher (Journal of Law 2019, item 1450 with later amendments). Knowledge and skills acquired by graduates of BA English Studies allow them to work as a teacher of English in private language schools and in language schools that offer courses designed for pre-school and school pupils.
Translation specialisation
Students of the translation specialisation are prepared to work as a translator of English. Apart from general vocabulary, they know the specialised terminology from different domains including law and medicine. They have competence and knowledge to translate different types of texts including economy, business and administration. Additionally, they have knowledge and skills to translate the literary texts. Graduates of the translation specialisation can find employment as a translator, an assistant of an executive, travel guide or a representative of public relations.
Graduates of MA English Studies are well-acquainted with literature, culture, tradition and history of the English speaking countries and are well educated linguistically. Graduates are specialists of the English language at the level close to C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment. Graduates equipped with such knowledge and skills are prepared to gain additional qualifications that enable them to work as translators, editors, and propagators of the English culture. They can find employment in the cultural institutions, publishing houses, editorial offices, radio and TV, administration and in companies and business entities which cooperate with the English speaking countries such as transportation and logistics.
As students of MA English Studies continue learning the second foreign language, graduates can use it at B2+ level, which is an extra asset in the labour market.
Teaching specialisation
Students of the teaching specialisation continue their studies initiated at BA level. Graduates are granted the master’s degree (Polish: magister) and are qualified to work as teachers of English from the 4th to the 8th grade of the primary and secondary school according to the Regulation of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education concerning standard of education preparing students to work as a teacher (Journal of Law, item 1450 with later amendments). Students are admitted to study the teaching specialisation only if they completed BA English Studies. Candidates who graduated from other university than University of Zielona Góra are obliged to complete the differences in university curriculum resulting from a versatile approach to meet the educational standard for teachers in different universities.
Translation specialisation
Graduates of the translation specialisation are equipped with knowledge and skills in the scope of translation theory and practice. They are well-prepared to translate both literary and specialized texts and interpret speeches from Polish into English and vice versa. They are knowledgeable about peculiarities of the translator’s profession including the profession of the certified translator. They are prepared to write a state exam to become a certified translator. Additionally, they are acquainted with and know how to use basic techniques of audiovisual translation.
